Driving home from a church service one night, we were going through the usual maze of traffic in the city. Then out from nowhere, a brand new Pajero swerved from its lane and cut across in front of the car that i was driving.No signal to indicate where he was going, no warnings signs, no apologies, nothing! as if that was not enough, the vehicle continued to plow its way through the line of cars and jeepneys. “What manners!” I thought. The person who was driving could afford such an expensive vehicle.Yet could not afford manners. I would possibly understand better if it were a jeepney or bus driver doing it, but not a supposedly “educated and cultured” individual.
As we look at society today, there is a trend to neglect manners. Even among the so-called “high society,” this seems to be a practice that has been placed in the dust bins of history. Children, even from exclusive schools, are not without exception. They boast about IQs, scientific jargon, computer literacy, Internet, e-mail, and all these boastings on high technology, yet they do not have the courtesy top utter a simple, “Excuse me”,”Thank You”,”Good morning,Sir!” or reply to an invitation with an RSVP, stand up to honor an elderly, or even speak up politely when asked a question. What about yawning in public, burping or belching, or even spitting on the street?
Good manners are founded upon the biblical principle, “Do unto others what you want others to do unto you” It is about respect, sensitivity, and consideration toward other people.
Manners reflect godly character. It brings us to a point in our lives where we need to stop thinking about ourselves and begin thinking of others. When we live this way, we will think twice before doing something that will adversely affect a brother or a sister.
